CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

ROSE

Rose looked up from working on her computer in Hank’s hotel suite as he walked into the room. “Did you get the email from Brian?” she asked.

“Yes. That’s why I was coming to find you. I just got off a call with Mitch and Duncan Armstrong. They want us to travel to Phoenix to check out the two properties there. Hopefully we can get some worthy shots of the hotel even though renovation is still going on. We can stage various areas if needed.”

Hank walked over and kissed her on the cheek. “We can pretend our stay there is our honeymoon.”

She laughed. Now that they were engaged, Hank was more anxious than she about setting a wedding date. As much as she liked the idea, she wasn’t going to do anything about it while she was focusing on Alec and being there for him during his illness. She wanted her wedding to be a happy time.

“I ordered two rooms for us.” She gave him a mischievous grin. “But I’m open to room service.”

Playing along, he said, “I’ve heard it’s very good.”

They were laughing together as he drew her up into his arms. “Love you, Rose.”

###

Later that day, they walked into the Blaise Group’s hotel, The Desert Queen. Work was being done on the lobby, changing the paint color on the walls from a harsh red to a subtle light tan in order to showcase the new furniture that had been ordered. Some of the tall pottery pots planted with a variety of cacti would remain. Others would be replaced for being too garish.

Assessing the situation, Rose was happy the space itself was pleasing. With the new décor, it would become stunning. She bypassed the easel holding a sign apologizing for any inconvenience and telling about exciting news to follow. The sign was something she and Hank had worked on together. Even the smallest detail mattered.

On the exterior side of the room, she looked through the sliding-glass doors to the landscaping beyond where a new fountain was being installed. Brent Armstrong had bragged so much about the hotels in his family, she wondered if he would concede that the “dressing up” on this one really made a difference. But it wasn’t the physical appearance alone that would make this hotel more in keeping with the Desert Sage Inn. Staff had to be trained and motivated to do a better job. That was something Willow was going to be working on along with John Rodriquez.

“What do you think?” asked Hank, coming up beside her. “Makes a big difference, huh?”

“Yes. I want a comprehensive tour of the property tomorrow. Today, I want to do pretty much what I did at the inn and act like a guest.”

He grinned at her. “Want me to be Papa B?”

Smiling, she shook her head. The first time they’d met, she’d only known him as Leah’s grandfather, Papa B. To her embarrassment he’d later been introduced to her as Hank Bowers, the man from The Blaise Group assigned to work opposite her.
